Adam Hussain were serve as president of the Lansing City Council for the upcoming year

LANSING, Mich. – The Lansing City Council kicked off 2022 by electing Adam Hussain as its president. The vote happened Monday night (Jan. 3), during the council’s first meeting of the year.

Hussain has been on the Lansing City Council since 2015. He represents Lansing’s Ward 3. He’s not new to a leadership role, as he was the City Council vice president in 2020 and 2021. He’ll replace At-large Councilmember Peter Spadafore as president.

“I make two promises: One, that I will make mistakes in this position, but I promise you I will hold myself accountable,” Hussain said during the meeting. The second, he added, “I promise that I will do my very best to be present, be prepared, to not only be accessible but also to be inclusive and to ensure that we’re all working as a team.”

He continued, “I really appreciate the support, and I look forward to working with you in the next year.”

At-large Councilmember Carol Wood was voted vice president by the City Council. She’s serving her sixth term on council and was vice president in 2002, as well as council president in 2003, 2013, 2018 and 2019.

Both Hussain and Wood’s current terms are set to end in 2023.

“We’ve got a number of dedicated people that are looking forward to change and to improving our neighborhoods and the economy,” Wood said at the meeting. “We realize that we’re in the middle of a pandemic and having to fight through those issues.”

Wood added, “I think Councilmember Hussain will be a fantastic president. As vice president for the last two years, he’s done a great job. He’s very inclusive of trying to make sure that everybody gets the information, not only those of us on council, but the public as well.”

Lansing City Council members, both new and reelected, were sworn in during the the Committee of the Whole meeting. The next City Council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 10 at Lansing City Hall.
