Super Bowl Column: Los Angeles Rams Defeat Cincinnati Bengals

The Rams inched out the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 to win the 2022 Super Bowl

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Los Angeles Rams are officially the 2022 Super Bowl champions. The Rams inched out the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 on Sunday (Feb. 13) at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, and it was down to the wire. Following a last-minute touchdown from the Rams, the Bengals seemed poised to at least tie up the game in the final seconds, but the Rams shut down their defense with seconds left on the clock.

The Rams’ Stafford was 26/40 for 283 yards with three touchdowns on Sunday. The Bengals’ Joe Burrow was 22/33 for 263 yards with one touchdown.

The game really heated up in the second half. Burrow threw to Tee Higgins on the first play of the third quarter, and the crow witnessed a 75-yard touchdown pass. Following that was more Bengals fanfare, as when the Rams got the ball, on the first play, Stafford’s pass to Ben Skowronek was intercepted. From there, the Bengals took a 13-10 lead.

Both teams traded scores, and with minutes left on the clock, the Rams found themselves inches from a touchdown to take the lead. On the 15th play of the drive, Stafford handed things off to Kupp, who took the Rams to a 23-20 lead. Only 1:25 was left in the game.

Cincinnati got the ball but was unable to get close enough for a field goal or touchdown. Fate was cemented.

Commentary: I’m happy for the Los Angeles Rams, who have fought hard to build this franchise. But, let’s call it like it is. Matthew Stafford was handed an all-star team this year. The congratulations go to the team surrounding Stafford, more than anything. The Bengals led most of the game and played a better game, in my opinion. But, that’s the world of sports. It doesn’t matter who plays a better game- what matters is the score when the clock strikes 00. The Rams did it, and for that, I tip my hat off to them. Here’s hoping the Bengals have another shot down the road.
