Oxford High School students back in class for the first time since shooting

Monday, Jan. 24, marked the first time Oxford High School students have been in class since the deadly Nov. 30 shooting

OXFORD, Mich. – Students at Oxford High School are continuing on their journey to heal following a horrific mass shooting nearly two months ago. On Monday (Jan. 24), students will step inside the halls of Oxford High School for the first time since Nov. 30.

It’s an emotional day, and students aren’t expected to jump back into the swing of things without setbacks. The shooting on Nov. 30 left four people dead and seven others injured, and it’s a traumatic experience that still lives with students. While Monday is the first day high school students returned to class, Oxford Middle School students started with in-person classes on Jan. 10.

Oxford High School’s Principal Steven Wolf released a video addressing the return of in-person classes. In the video message, he gave a massive thanks to the community for their support and told students that the Oxford Wildcats are reclaiming their school– and lives.

Wolf also mentioned that many mental health resources are available for students who are struggling with returning to classes. “We know it’s going to be really difficult for our students and our staff as we are still grieving,” Wolf said. He also said the physical and emotional health of students is his focus.

“Throughout the last several weeks, we are reminded of one important fact, that our community is strong,” Wolf said, adding that asking for help in difficult situations, such as these, is “Oxford strong.”

“Students, you have been filling us up with tremendous love and hope,” Wolf said. “It’s going to be a great day to be a Wildcat because we are Oxford strong. “
