Americans are flocking to these 10 states

United Van Lines' new study shows the the top state Americans moved to and from in 2021

United Van Lines recently released their 45th Annual National Movers Study today, which describes what states are among the most popular, and unpopular, for moving trends.

The annual study, which analyzes United Van Lines’ exclusive data for customers’ state-to-state migration patterns, says the state with the highest amount of inbound migration is Vermont, with a percentage of %74. Other popular states included South Dakota (69%), South Carolina (63%), West Virginia (63%) and Florida (62%), all within the top five of the top inbound states for 2021.

As for the states Americans are moving away from, New Jersey is at the top of the tally. The state’s percentage of outbound migration is 71%. New Jersey is no stranger to reverse migration, either, as it’s been No. 1 for the past four years. Other states that residents are moving away from include Illinois (67%), New York (63%), Connecticut (60%) and California (59%), all within the top five of the company’s outbound list.

“This new data from United Van Lines is indicative of COVID-19’s impact on domestic migration patterns, with 2021 bringing an acceleration of moves to smaller, midsized towns and cities,” Michael A. Stoll, economist and professor in the Department of Public Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles, said.

He added, “We’re seeing this not only occur because of Americans’ desire to leave high density areas due to risk of infection, but also due to the transformation of how we’re able to work, with more flexibility to work remote.”

Another shift, the study added, is that many Gen Xers are retiring earlier and at a younger age than past generations and moving to warmer climates or states more facilitating to retirees.
