Detroit City Council approves recreational marijuana sales

The ordinance goes into effect immediately

DETROIT, Mich. – Recreational marijuana sales have been prohibited in the city of Detroit, but that all changes now, as the Motor City has officially approved recreational marijuana sales. The change comes about four years after the State of Michigan approved recreational marijuana sales.

The Detroit City Council voted 8-1 to approve the recreational marijuana ordinance on Tuesday (April 5). At-large Councilmember Mary Waters was the one vote against it, citing a “broken licensing system.”

Under the new ordinance, half the licenses will be reserved for social equity applicants. Detroit will also take into consideration past drug convictions and communities severely impacted by drug policies.

The ordinance goes into effect immediately.

The council was expected to hold the vote in March, but held another public hearing this week after the Law Department concluded that proposed amendments from the council were substantial enough to get a second hearing.
