Michigan to see icy, hazardous weather this weekend
The National Weather Service has issued a handful of winter weather advisories
It appears Michigan is heading into a period of ice and dangerous driving for the latter half of this weekend. If you’re planning to be on the roads on Saturday evening (Jan. 8) or Sunday, be careful, drive slowly and allow some extra time to get to your destination.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a handful of winter weather advisories on Saturday spanning from the Lake Michigan shore to the southeastern part of the state. Saturday night, light freezing rain and drizzle is expected to form, ushering in icy road conditions overnight and into Sunday.
The NWS in Grand Rapids has issued an advisory for Clinton, Ingham Mason, Lake, Osceola, Oceana, Newaygo, Mecosta, Muskegon, Montcalm, Ottawa, Kent, Ionia, Allegan, Barry, Eaton, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Jackson counties. According to the NWS, icy conditions will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday and go until 4 a.m. on Sunday.
“Ice amounts will be light, but there will be enough to cause untreated roads and walking surfaces to become slick,” the NWS of Grand Rapids states on their Facebook page.
The NWS in Detroit is expecting Shiawassee, Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair, Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee and Monroe counties will get icy conditions starting at 8 p.m. tonight. That area’s advisory also runs until 4 a.m. on Sunday.
“Light freezing rain and drizzle will develop across southeast Michigan late this evening and persist into the overnight hours,” NWS in Detroit says on Facebook.
Periods of light freezing rain and freezing drizzle are expected to begin during the late evening hours, according to the advisory, which could result in a glaze of ice to less than a tenth of an inch of ice. Drivers are advised to stay off the road overnight, but if travel is necessary, drive slowly and keep a larger distance from other vehicles.
