Michigan art contest announced for K-12 students

Governor Gretchen Whitmer is asking K-12 Michigan students to send their art in

LANSING, Mich. — Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced an art contest for all K-12 Michigan students. For the contest, Whitmer is asking Michigan’s K-12 students to come up with a creative design for the 2022 State of the State program cover along the theme of, “Why do you believe in Michigan?”

Students are encouraged to be “as creative as possible” and use crayon, marker, paint or any other materials to make their visions come to life. To send in a design, simply follow the instructions via the State of the State cover contest page here.

“Michigan is home to such innovative, creative young people, and I am excited to highlight the artistic talents of a young Michigander as part of the 2022 State of the State program,” Governor Whitmer said in a statement.

She added, “What unites every Michigander is that we all believe in our state, and I am excited to share a student’s artwork that highlights what makes Michigan so special to them. I hope students from all over Michigan show off their skills and submit their entry to the State of the State Art Contest.”

Governor Whitmer will deliver her third State of the State Address on Wednesday, Jan. 27. In it, she’ll talk about her “vision for Michigan and plan to address key issues to put Michigan first, including jobs, education, infrastructure, and Michigan’s strong economic progress,” according to a statement. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the State of the State Address will take place virtually, following CDC and State of Michigan’s best practices. Michiganders will be able to watch the State of the State on several local TV stations and online via Michigan.gov here.

The deadline for students to send in their artwork is 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 16. The student who sends in the winning design will score a prize, which hasn’t been revealed yet.
