Tips to keep your car safe as cold air moves through the Midwest

Very low temperatures can hamper your vehicle's functionality, AAA says

Winter in the Midwest is not for the faint at heart. The region is known for its heavy snowstorms and frigid temperatures, and 2022 is no exception.

Arctic air is moving in and out of much of Michigan the next few weeks, ushering in the coldest air of the season. AAA wants to let residents know that when the temperatures go down, it’s more important than ever to take good care of your vehicle.

Very low temperatures can hamper your vehicle’s functionality and cause permanent damage. In honor of winter, AAA is sharing some tips for drivers to keep their vehicles in tip-top shape.

AAA’s Tips for Winter Vehicle Care:

Windshield washer fluid – Make sure to load up on anti-freeze for your windshield wipers.
Engine Coolant – Use an engine coolant that offers anti-freeze protection that covers the lowest temperatures you get in your region. A good rule of thumb is -30oF/-34oC.
Vehicle Storage – Parking your vehicle in a garage is bet. If you don’t have a garage, put a tarp over the hood or park in an area that’s protected from the wind and elements.
Battery – Make sure to test your charging system to make sure it is fully charged and in good condition.
Gas – Keep your gas tank filled to at least half to avoid freezing.
Car doors – To prevent freezing, put a plastic trash bag between the door or window glass and frame.
Car Wash – Don’t get your car washed until the temperature gets above freezing.

AAA also states that service issues for cars go up in the winter, especially when it comes to dead batteries. In case of emergency, AAA says you should travel with a cell phone and charger, stay in your vehicle and only run the car long enough to keep it warm. Bundle up, and stay safe.
