From Lansing to Detroit, read on for a collection of festive spots to celebrate Christmas in Michigan

This holiday are here, and if you’re in the Mitten for Christmas, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the festive holiday. From glorious lights displays to ice skating, read on for a selection of Christmas things to do in Michigan this season, and embrace the holiday.

Talk a Walk Through Downtown Lansing

Downtown Lansing is all decked out for the holidays, so a trip to the Capital City is in order. The official Michigan Christmas tree stands 63 feet tall, and it’s lit 24 hours a day, so it’s always a good time to stop by and view the glorious Norwegian Spruce (pictured above). While you’re there, walk through downtown Lansing and view the local shops, plus the traditional red bells placed at the center of Washington Square.

Shop at Downtown Detroit Markets

Cadillac Square in Detroit is known for their jolly village featuring local vendors. If you’re looking for a last-minute holiday gift that’s Made in Michigan, Cadillac Square is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve and, for a late gift, noon to 5 p.m. the day after Christmas. The markets and lodge will be open through Dec. 31, only excluding Christmas Day.

View the Potter Park Zoo Wonderland of Lights

Lansing’s Potter Park Zoo is holding its 37th annual Wonderland of Lights event, featuring thousands of glistening lights and holiday decorations adorning the zoo. Several sections of the route have Chrismtas music blaring, making it an even more festive event. The event runs through Dec. 26 and is open Thursdays through, Sundays 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. For information and to buy tickets, head to PotterParkZoo.org.

Check Out Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo

Many Zoos put on the glitz and glam during the holidays with light shows, and the Detroit Zoo is no exception. Wild Lights runs at the zoo through Jan. 9, 2022. Walk through the zoo and check out millions of lights on display. The zoo is closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas, but open the rest of December. Stomp Through Michigan Tech Trails

If you’re a bit more north this holiday season, the Michigan Tech Trails, located near downtown Houghton, are a beauty. The rails feature long downhills and endless views of a winter wonderland. Daily or season passes are required for non-students. Ski rentals are available. For more information, visit the Michigan Tech Recreation website.

Ice Skating at Lansing’s City Hall Plaza

If ice skating is at the top of your Christmas to-do list, you can get your skate on even if it’s warm. City Hall Plaza in Lansing has a synthetic ice rink that isn’t impacted by weather, so you can skate no matter the weather. The rink is open each day from sunrise to 10 p.m. Visitors have to bring their own skates, though.

Take a Drive Through Local Neighborhoods

No matter where you are in Michigan, chances are you’ll find some incredible light displays in your town. Michiganders are known for their decorating skills, especially around the holidays, when Christmas decorations look even better with a light dusting of Michigan snow. Drive through some area neighborhoods and take in the festive view. If you’re in Lansing, a few suggestions include the Whitehills, Moores Park, Pinecrest and Cheltingham neighborhoods.
