Shop early for Halloween candy, or else you might miss out

According to the National Retail Federation's annual survey, Halloween participation is going back to pre-pandemic levels

Halloween is just over a month away, which is wild to think about. Where did the summer go? If you have your heart set on passing out Halloween candy this year, you’d better act fast, because a Halloween candy shortage is predicted this year.

According to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey, Halloween participation is going back to pre-pandemic levels in 2022. That said, you should shop for candy if there is a particular kind of candy that you want to hand out, and if you want that candy packaged in Halloween designs.

In late July, The Hershey Company, the biggest and most popular candy producer in the U.S., reported a net sales growth of 19% for the second quarter. That’s huge.

According to Hersey President and CEO Michele Buck, the rise is because, partly, “seasonal consumer engagement is expected to remain high, and we expect single-digit sales growth for both our Halloween and holiday seasons. Despite this strong growth, we will not be able to meet consumer demand due to capacity constraints.”

The Hershey Company later came out and said that a shortage doesn’t mean a general candy shortage, but a shortage in candy in Halloween packaging. Hershey’s every day and seasonal products are crafted on the same line, so Hersheys works to create season products with the goal to not negatively impact production of regular candy. Hersheys makes Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Kit Kat bars, Twizzlers and other popular candy.
