The New Year’s Eve ball drop has been going strong in New York City’s Times Square since 1907. The first ball for the festivities was 700-pounds and constructed of iron, wood and 100 lightbulbs. This year’s ball weighs more than 11,000 pounds and features special Waterford Crystal triangles.

New York City has been gearing up for a big return to in-personal celebrating at the city’s annual New Year’s Eve ball drop, but those plans are changing.

New health and safety protocols are in place for this year’s Times Square New Year’s Eve festivities. Most years, 58,000 people crowd into Times Square to watch the action unfold. This year, the event will be limited to 15,000 people.

Those attending the Times Square ball drop will also be required to wear masks and provide proof of vaccination status to attend. Attendees will have to be fully vaccinated if they’re older than 5, and unvaccinated children younger than 5 will have to be accompanied by a vaccinated adult, according to New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office. The new protocols are in response to New York City’s current surge in cases of COVID-19 due to the omicron variant.
