Michigan State University to lift most indoor mask mandates

Starting March 6, Spartans will not be required to wear a mask in most indoor settings, except during class and in research and academic labs

Michigan State University President Samuel L. Stanley has sent out an email to students and faculty regarding an update to the school’s mask requirement.

Beginning this Sunday (March 6), Spartans will not be required to wear a mask in most indoor settings, with the exceptions of during class and in research and academic labs. Masks will also still be mandatory on CATA buses and in health facilities, according to the letter.

To attend sporting events and other entertainment events on campus, masks and vaccine verification will no longer be required, the letter states. However, MSU still strongly advises those who are unvaccinated or have symptoms to wear a mask.

The requirement for students and employees to get boosted remain in effect. Students who don’t will not be eligible to enroll for Summer and Fall classes in 2022.

In the letter, he adds, “It is important to remember that many in our Spartan community will choose to wear a mask for their protection. Some in our community also may ask you to wear a mask when you visit them due to special health concerns. As individuals make their personal decisions about health and safety, we should respect their decisions.”

He concluded by stating, “Moving forward, we will continue to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and adjust our directives as needed. Thank you, all, for doing your part to keep the Spartan community safe.”
