Free swim lessons being offered in the Detroit area this summer

DETROIT, Mich. – If you live in the metro Detroit area and are looking for swim lessons for your kids, you’re in luck, as free lessons are being offered this summer.

Huron-Clinton Metroparks has joined forces with a collection of local organizations to offer free lessons and cover the costs of swimsuits, goggles, equipment and instructors. The program aims to lower swimming deaths and injuries this summer.

According to Metroparks, more than 25 people drown in Michigan every summer. A 2021 study found that one of the biggest reasons children don’t take swimming lessons is because of the cost of those lessons, Metroparks says.

“Southeast Michigan has some of the best water recreation opportunities available, and we want everyone to have full access and feel safe when they visit the parks, so we are grateful for the opportunity to partner with organizations throughout the region to improve swim safety for the children who live here,” Huron-Clinton Metroparks director Amy McMillan said in a statement. “We can accomplish more together than we can by working individually.”

Certified instructors from the American Red Cross will give lessons at the LBrennan, Heilmann, Butzel and Patton pools. Public transpiration will be available to go to all the locations. For more information, visit Detroit’s website.
