University of Michigan ending mask requirement for most indoor spaces starting March 14

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – On Wednesday (March 9), the University of Michigan announced it will get rid of its mask mandate for most indoor spaces beginning March 14.

The university made the announcement in a press release, stating that wearing masks will be optional for many indoor spaces, including athletic events, offices and residence halls.

Masks will still be mandatory in classrooms, additional instructional spaces, patient care areas, campus COVID-19 testing sites and on campus buses, according to the release, for at least the full winter term.

“Mask use is still an effective strategy for enhanced personal protection, especially for those with compromised immune status, those who are not vaccinated or up to date on their COVID-19 vaccinations, and anyone with a perceived increased situational risk,” Robert Ernst, associate vice president for student life for health and wellness and CHRC director, said in a press release.

The new policy pertains to all students, faculty, staff and visitors, whether or not they are vaccinated. It also applies to the Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses. Guests attending indoor Michigan Athletic events will also not be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test for entry.
