Michigan State, Michigan announce updated COVID-19 event policies

Spectators will have to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to attend indoor events

The spring semester is set to begin at colleges and universities across the U.S. in a matter of days, and some schools are changing COVID-19 protocols due to rising cases and the growing omicron variant.

Michigan State University and the University of Michigan have both announced new protocol for visitors when sporting events on their campuses.

As of Saturday (Jan. 1), both schools are requiring guests to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of entering venues for games. Both universities are also extending their mask mandates, which are in place for all home athletic events. The COVID-19 vaccine requirement applies to all attendees ages 12 and up.

The requirement also extends to indoor theatre, art and music events on both campuses. For Michigan State, it will kick off on Jan. 4 with the scheduled “Cats” performance at Wharton Center.

For both schools, refunds will not be given to visitors who are not able to get into an event due to the new protocol.

“Refunds will not be granted as all guests are able to enter facilities with a negative COVID-19 test even if they are not able or willing to show vaccination status. Fans who are unable to attend are encouraged to transfer their tickets to others who are able to attend or offer their tickets for sale through StubHub,” states a Michigan State University release regarding the new policies.

Via a release from the University of Michigan, the following will be required to enter a home sporting event:

  • An official, government-issued vaccination card, including both the guest’s name and date the latest vaccine doses were administered.
  • A photo or digital version of an official government-issued vaccination card, including both the visitor’s name and date the latest doses were administered.
  • For staff, the ResponsiBLUE app to show they are following the U-M COVID-19 vaccination requirement.
  • For students, their valid MCard.
  • A printed or digital negative COVID-19 PCR or rapid test administered by a healthcare professional within 72 hours of entry. At-home or over-the-counter tests don’t apply. The test results should include the guest’s name and date the test was administered.
