Grand Rapids’ World of Winter features inspiring artwork throughout the city

Outdoor art installations run through March 6

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Michigan offers a plethora of ways to enjoy the cold winter months, from winter hikes to cross-country skiing. But, what if you just want to walk around town and take in the beautiful, snow-covered sites?

One Grand Rapids event offering a walk around town in the winter, all while taking in the snowy sites. The World of Winter outdoor art event is back, offering a collection of outdoor art installations.

While the exhibit just kicked off, if you can’t make it to Grand Rapids right now, you’ll have plenty of time to take in the sights. The art will stay in place throughout Grand Rapids until March 6.

Some of the art pieces include “Light Maze” at 555 Monroe, a large, light-based art installation in partnership with Ximenez Group based in Spain. “Designed by the German architect Ben Busche, from Brut Deluxe studio, the light maze was born with the aim of offering an innovative and immersive experience,” the event’s website states.

Another exhibit, “Trumpet Flowers, at AH-NAB-AWEN PARK is a large outdoor installation in partnership with Amigo & Amigo based in Australia. “You can’t help but feel you are shrinking as you approach these super-sized trumpet flowers,” the event website’s description states. “Tentatively stepping inside some unseen Giant’s musical garden, you become surrounded by an explosive and immersive jungle of light, color and sound. Moving in and around the flower forest uncovers a deeper connection with their individual trumpet key controllers, interactive keys that allow you to play each flower as a 2-6m towering musical and light instrument.”

The festival’s official description states the event “takes advantage of Michigan’s cold climate to provide interesting ways for people to experience and enjoy the season. This festival aspires to make Grand Rapids a more active winter city, which makes Grand Rapids a more active year-round city.”

All programming and event activities are free and socially-distanced. World of Winter is organized by Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., the City of Grand Rapids and numerous community partners. More information, visit the World of Winter website.
