Taking Your Cell Phone to the Restroom Increases Your Risk of Hemorrhoids

Nobody wants hemorrhoids. They’re painful and simply not fun. Now, according to a new study published in the National Library of Medicine, it turns out that taking your cell phone to the bathroom can increase the chance of the disease.

Why? As it turns out, when taking a smartphone to the bathroom, most people sit on the toilet for too long, likely doing social media or checking email, which increases the chance of developing those nasty hemorrhoids.

AS colorectal surgeon Dr. Karen Zaghiyan tells Healthline, “It’s not the actual act of using a smartphone that is the problem. Rather, sitting on the toilet [whether you are reading or just sitting there] for a prolonged period of time can definitely lead to hemorrhoid problems.”

Dr. Zaghiyan adds not to be too embarrassed about your hemorrhoids, if you do get them, telling Healthline, “Hemorrhoids are a collection of veins inside and outside the anus. Everyone has hemorrhoids. We are born with them.”
