Powerball jackpot advances to $522 million

Nobody took home the big Powerball jackpot on Jan. 1

The first Powerball jackpot drawing of the New Year took place on Saturday (Jan. 1), and it was for a whopping $518 million. What better way to start out 2022 than with half a billion dollars, right? While four players scored at least $1 million in the drawing, nobody won the main Powerball jackpot, meaning it will extend into next week and make the lucky winner even richer.

The next Powerball drawing will take place on Monday (Jan. 3) and be worth $522 million with a cash option of $371.5 million. The jackpot will likely be even higher after by the time the drawing rolls around as more people purchase tickets.

Here are the Powerball numbers of interest for the Jan. 1 drawing:

  • Powerball Numbers (white) for Jan. 1: 6-12-39-48-50
  • Red Powerball Power Number: 7
  • The Power Play Number: 2
  • Double Play Numbers: 4-6-7-10-30
  • Double Play Powerball Number: 9

As for the other Powerball winners, while there was no grand prize winner, four players matched all five white numbers drawn to score at least $1 million. Those winning tickets were sold in California, Arizona, Florida and Maryland, according to a release. The Maryland winner also opted for the Power Play option, so their winnings were doubled, making it $2 million.

Before the Jan. 1 drawing, the Powerball jackpot was for $500 million. In Michigan, the highest-winning tickets sold scored $50,000. Two people win that prize. Overall, 2,753,745 tickets were sold that won at least $4 in the Jan. 4 drawing.

Powerball is available to residents in 44 States, as well as Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. To play, you pick five white numbers from (1 to 69) and one red ball (1 to 26). Powerball tickets are $2 each with the $1 Power Play added option.

During “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” television special, Powerball named its first millionaire of the New Year. Just after midnight, Brian Mineweaser of Pennsylvania won the $1 million prize. His award was announced live during ABC’s broadcast of New Year’s event.
